How to Create Location Pages That Actually Rank

If you serve more than one city or town, location pages are one of the highest-leverage things you can add to your website. Done right, they let you rank in every area you actually serve instead of just the one your office happens to sit in. Done wrong, copying the same page and swapping the city name, Google sees through it instantly and none of them rank.

1

Map your service radius

2

Give each area its own real page

3

Link them all together

4

Check each one before it's live

Find The Areas Actually Worth A Page

Open Google Maps and search your county or region. Zoom into your area and list every surrounding city and town within a realistic service radius, most home service businesses land somewhere between 10 and 25 miles depending on how rural or dense the area is. If you don't want to do this by hand, ask ChatGPT to list the towns within that radius of your address, then put the full list into a spreadsheet so you're working off something organized, not memory.

Give Every Area Its Own Page, With Genuinely Different Content

Each location on your list gets a dedicated page, not a section, not a paragraph tacked onto your homepage. The location name goes in both the title and the URL. If you're a plumber targeting Austin, the URL becomes something like yourwebsite.com/plumber-austin.

  • Write unique content for every single page, not the same paragraph with the city name swapped
  • Mention real, specific things about that area if you can: neighborhoods you've worked in, local landmarks, common issues that area's homes tend to have
  • Add a short explainer video to each page if you have one, it keeps people on the page longer, and time on page is a real signal
Duplicate content

"We proudly serve Austin with fast, reliable plumbing." Same paragraph, new city name pasted in twelve times.

Genuinely unique

Real neighborhoods you've worked in, the specific issues homes in that area tend to have, and your own photos or video from jobs there.

This is the step people cut corners on, and it's exactly the step that determines whether any of this works. Google has gotten very good at detecting templated, swapped-city-name content, and when it does, none of your location pages rank, not even the one for your actual home city.

Link Everything Together On Purpose

Your homepage is your most powerful page on the entire site. Link every location page from it, that passes authority down to each one and tells Google exactly which areas you serve. Then link your location pages to each other too, a real internal network, not a set of orphaned pages nobody finds.

Check Each Page Before It Goes Live

Once a page is written, run it through an SEO checker before publishing, checking title tags, header structure, and that the content is genuinely unique against your other pages. Do this one page at a time as you build the list out, not as one big batch at the end, catching a duplicate-content issue on page 3 is a lot easier than catching it after you've published 20.
